The IFSO Certification in Metabolic Bariatric Surgery is an international mark of excellence, designed to recognize surgeons who demonstrate advanced knowledge, clinical judgment, and commitment to the highest standards in the surgical treatment of obesity and metabolic diseases.

The Exam

The applications will be selected on a "first come first served basis". The first 12 valid applications in chronological order will be selected to do the exam in Toronto in September 2026 and get the IFSO Certification.

A Comprehensive 3-Part Assessment

To ensure a robust evaluation, the certification process includes:

  • Clinical Case Analysis (45–60 minutes)
    Candidates are assessed on their ability to manage real-life scenarios, judged by key clinical insights and decision-making skills.
  • Multiple-Choice Test (90–120 minutes)
    100 questions covering all aspects of bariatric and metabolic surgery. One point for each correct answer.
  • Scientific Paper Discussion (30 minutes per candidate)
    Five articles sent in advance. Candidates discuss and critically appraise each paper, demonstrating their ability to integrate current evidence into practice.

DOCUMENTS check-list for application

N.B: All the requested documents have to be provided in a SINGLE file in PDF format, according to the following order:

  1. Proof of identity (ID or Passport)
  2. Curriculum Vitae (using the template provided)
  3. Declaration by two referents (using the template provided)
  4. Reference forms by two referents (using the template provided)
  5. Certificate of Primary Medical Qualification
  6. Evidence of >6 years of surgical practice + Board Certificate in General/ Visceral Surgery (or equivalent document depending on the country of training)
  7. Medical Registration Certificate / Certificate of employment
  8. Surgical logbook (using the template excel file provided)
  9. Evidence of credit points in CME, hands-on training and authorship in at least 3 metabolic bariatric surgery-related publications within the last 5 years
  10. Proof-of-attendance at 1 IFSO World Congress or Chapter Meeting within the last 5 years (certificate of attendance to be provided)

Fee

Online Payment of the 350 USD$ fee will be enabled only after acceptance of the application. The payment will be due in one week after notification of acceptance. If the payment is not received by one week after notification, the application will be discarded.
