27 - Khaled Gawdat 2025-2026 Egypt
After completing his medical degree, masters, and PhD in general
surgery at Ain-Shams University, Professor Gawdat has been
widely regarded as having pioneered MBS in Egypt, introducing it
to the region in 1996. Gawdat is currently Professor of General
Surgery at Ain Shams University, and recently, Chair of the Surgery
Department. He has performed several thousand MBS
procedures over his career, with a particular focus on revisional
surgery. Gawdat pioneered the use of a small-incision open
technique as a cost-effective alternative to laparoscopic MBS
procedures in resource-limited settings. In 1999, he founded the
Egyptian Society for Bariatric Surgery and served as its President
across three terms. He helped establish the Pan Arab Society for
Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, becoming its first elected
President in 2016, and playing a leading role in the formation of
IFSO’s Middle East and North African Chapter (IFSO-MENAC) in
2017, serving as its President as the chapter grew from six
founding countries to eleven. Professor Gawdat served as the
most recent IFSO President from 2025-2026, marking the first
president in the organization's history from the MENA chapter.
Gawdat continues to serve as an Associate and Advisory Editor of
Obesity Surgery.
