17 - Luigi Angrisani 2013-2014 Italy
Professor Angrisani has been a leading figure in Italian MBS for
decades. In 1999, together with his mentor and friend, Nicola
Scopinaro, he chaired the First International Symposium of
Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery (ISLOS) in Naples. Elected
President of the Italian Society of Obesity Surgery (SICOB) in 2006,
he served in that role from 2008-2010, before serving as President
of IFSO from 2013-2014. During his IFSO presidency, he was a
primary champion for early-career surgeons, heavily supporting
the foundation and integration of the "Young-IFSO" chapter. He
also chaired and authored major international clinical consensus
statements, including widely cited updates on managing patients
with a high body mass index. Building on the global survey
inaugurated by Scopinaro and Buchwald, Angrisani has carried
forward the recurring IFSO Worldwide Survey, summarizing
global trends in MBS, one of the most cited series of papers
published in Obesity Surgery. The Italian Society of Surgery
awarded Angrisani the Ettore Ruggieri Prize in 2018 for his two
decades of research on gastroesophageal reflux and obesity. He
later chaired the IFSO Board of Trustees from 2019-2020, and
organized and presided over the 2023 IFSO World Congress in
                                           Naples.
