Conclusion
IFSO is fortunate to have had the talented leadership of both its organizational and congress
Presidents. These exceptional individuals helped a fledgling surgical society find its place in the
world of surgical medicine and surgical publications. IFSO grew from a small society generally
ignored by other medical/surgical specialties and societies and by prestigious journals. Today, it is a
large, highly respected, academic organization that defined “metabolic surgery”; guides a
much-cited, high impact-factor research journal; and trailblazes treatments that improve global
patient care.
