13 - Harry Frydenberg 2009-2010 Australia
Professor Frydenberg built an MBS career spanning decades at
the Epworth Centre for Bariatric Surgery in Melbourne. He was the
founding president of the IFSO Asia-Pacific Chapter (IFSO-APC)
and a Past President and Honorary Life Member of the Obesity
Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (now ANZMOSS).
Beyond his IFSO presidency, he served as IFSO’s
Secretary/Treasurer, was named an IFSO Life Member, and
continues to serve on its Board of Trustees. Frydenberg
co-organized the 2006 IFSO World Congress in Sydney, and in
2024 returned to lead the organization’s Melbourne World
Congress as Congress Co-President alongside Ahmad Aly. He
received the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his

Professor Miller has practiced general surgery for more than three
decades, the majority of it devoted to MBS. He performed
Austria’s first laparoscopic gastric band placement in 1992 and is
credited with developing the “pars flaccida” technique for gastric
band placement, a circular stapling technique for gastric bypass,
and endoluminal approaches to obesity surgery, all considered
groundbreaking contributions to the surgical treatment of obesity
and metabolic diseases. Academically, he served as the long-time
Head of the Department of Surgery at the Hallein Clinic in
Salzburg and was a full Professor of Surgery at the Paracelsus
Medical University. Miller founded the Austrian Society for the
Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders, serving as its
president for 15 years, going on to serve as the President of IFSO
from 2010-2011. During his IFSO presidency, he was a driving
force behind the creation and expansion of the IFSO Global
Registry, pressing for standardized international data collection.
He later organized and presided over the 20th IFSO World
Congress in Vienna in 2015.
