establishing an international scientific federation dedicated to obesity surgery. The discussions
reflected a growing consensus: while national societies were essential, the increasing complexity
and scientific importance of obesity treatment demanded a broader scope and structure. The
Minneapolis ASBS meeting did not mark the official birth of IFSO, but it represented the beginning
of a shared vision - one that would soon evolve into a global federation that could advance clinical
excellence, surgical and surgical research education, and patient advocacy.
Stockholm 1995: The Foundation of IFSO
Momentum continued to build throughout the following year through a series of discussions among
leaders in MBS. In 1995, during the 9th International Obesity Surgery Symposium in Stockholm,
Sweden, these efforts culminated in the founding of a new international organization, the
International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO).
At the inaugural meeting, Nicola Scopinaro, whose leadership and commitment to international
scientific collaboration had already profoundly influenced the field, was elected the first, and
honorary lifetime President of IFSO. He was joined by an international leadership group
representing multiple regions of the world:
