PREFACE
Khaled Gawdat, MBBCH, MS, MD
IFSO President, 2025-2026
Metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) and the history of IFSO are a great journey, built by great pioneers
who endured great hardships to transform a once-marginal procedure into a mainstream specialty
within which hundreds of thousands of operations are performed every year. That journey deserves
to be written down, especially for the new generation of MBS surgeons and integrated health
practitioners.
One of my aims for this presidential year was to gather and write the history of our Federation, as I
have witnessed so many changes in IFSO and in MBS personally. This volume is the work of many
hands — indeed, it presents our multicultural, multidisciplinary history in a variety of styles and from
a diversity of professional and personal perspectives.
This book brings together the history of MBS procedures, the history of our official journal, Obesity
Surgery, and the history of IFSO itself. From its founding in 1995 to today, more than thirty years of
achievement in education, training, and patient care have advanced every aspect of MBS, and will
continue to do so.
